How Fashion Blogs Use The Language Of Evaluation - 1745 Words

I am a devoted follower of fashion blogs, which allows me to read about the very latest fashion from local, national and international sources. Fashion bloggers need to be very knowledgeable of trends and upcoming events if they want to inform the public of these. For fashion bloggers the purpose is not to write essays like magazine articles but short paragraphs evaluating trends and events. Here I will attempt to discuss and demonstrate how fashion blogs use the language of evaluation. Fashion bloggers need to be careful when evaluating fashion trends and designers in order to express an opinion, as this may cause offense to designers and people who may like the trends. Fashion blogs have helped to promote new trends to a greater degree†¦show more content†¦Fashion blogs have a very similar content to fashion magazines, giving opinions about new trends and apparel. Retailers in the fashion industry have even started their own blogs to promote their products to persuade people to buy their products. Karen Kay stated that: â€Å"These days, before a designer’s runway show has even finished, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone in the audience, or better still, backstage, has recorded every silhouette, signature shoe, styling detail and sulking supermodel, then uploaded it on onto the internet for style watchers across the globe to enjoy.† This is in fact true and can often be seen in the format of live streaming videos of major fashion events. A fashion blogger has their own style of expressing opinions and making judgments, using the language of appraisal to explore, describe and explain fashion, while building interpersonal relationships between the reader and the blogger. Appraisal identifies three ‘systems’ for analysing the interpersonal resources of language, the attitude system, the graduation system, and the engagement system. The attitude system, which is essentially used to express emotional responses, uses language tools of affect to convey ranges of feelings such as unhappy to happy or, distraught to ecstatic.
